This is completely wrong, because scooters have long since grown up. Interestingly, most city scooters of this generation are produced in the Czech Republic, where scootering - or footbiking, as it is now called - is almost a national sport. Pedal scooters are widespread in the Czech Republic and are used for a variety of purposes - as City scooter for shopping or for the daily commute to work, as a touring scooter for excursions, as a Sport scooter for competitive sport or even as a Cross scooter for the downhill sport. Especially for adults, the world of scooters is very diverse. The kickscooter is a highly functional training device for therapy, fitness and competitive sports, but also ideal as a balancing and supplementary training for many endurance sports.

Kick Scooter Glossary

But what are the differences between the individual types of scooter? What makes a good city scooter and what makes a good all-rounder? Essentially, this depends on 3 factors:

  • Wheelbase: is the distance between the front and rear wheel axles. Basically, the longer the wheelbase, the better the driving characteristics when going straight and the less manoeuvrability.
  • Footboard height: A low footboard conserves strength and is important for speed, while a high footboard avoids the scooter hitting the ground.
  • Size of the wheel: The larger the wheel, the better the handling and speed when going straight. The smaller the wheel, the more manoeuvrable and agile the scooter.

The following table shows how the dimensions differ in relation to the different types of adult scooters:

Scooters for adults Footboard height Wheel size Wheelbase Special features
City scooter low-medium small low High manoeuvrability, often foldable
Cross scooter high large large Wide tyres, often also suspension fork and disc brakes
All-round scooter medium medium medium Compromise between manoeuvrability and speed
Sport scooter low large large Narrow tyres, Built for maximum speed

Where is kick scootering allowed for adults and children?

According to the StVO, scooters for adults and children are considered play equipment. This means that you are considered a pedestrian and are allowed to use pedestrian zones, pavements and most cycle paths, field paths and forest paths. In the City this naturally offers some advantages. A City scooter The new model is the ideal companion for shopping or quick trips around the city.

Adult scooters are the really sensible alternative to the climate-damaging e-scooters.

Various studies had shown that City scooter are by no means climate-friendly, despite their supposedly green image. The main reason is, on the one hand, the poor energy balance during production, and on the other hand, the fact that the electrical City scooter mainly replace journeys on foot, by bicycle or public transport. These are all modes of transport that are significantly more climate-friendly. In times of climate change, riding e-scooters is not an option from our point of view. This is also the reason why we do not stock electric scooters in our scooter shop.

The essential better alternative are scooters for adultswhich are extremely climate-friendly and healthy, yet still have the same fun factor as E-Scooter offer. Because riding adult kick scooters gives the same "surf" feeling as an e-scooter.

The advantages at a glance

  1. Kick scooters for adults are climate-friendly: Zero emissions, the climate is happy.
  2. Riding a scooter is healthy: Almost the entire body is trained. It uses significantly more muscles than cycling.
  3. Kick scooters make you flexible and mobile: One can work with the Kick scooter ride on the pavement as well as on the cycle path and in the pedestrian zone.

Riding a city scooter has it all - high training effect, but low strain on the joints

Whether in the city or on tours in the surrounding countryside - scootering is fun and trains the whole body at the same time. Per kilometre, an adult scooter rider does around 200 half squats. This burns about 30% more energy than cycling. Unlike cycling, the back muscles are also strengthened. The athletic footbike rider not only trains the torso, abdominal and leg muscles, but also the entire upper body. In addition, the kick scooter is an extremely joint-friendly means of transport. Especially for adults with back problems, a scooter is an ideal training tool. The distances and speeds involved in riding a scooter are almost the same as on a bicycle. However, you move more than on a bicycle and thus have neither standing nor sitting problems.

The following muscle groups are used:

  • Thigh muscles and calf muscles
  • Muscles in the chest and arm area
  • Abdominal and back muscles
  • Gluteal muscles and lumbar area

The scooter as Rehab Therapy device

Because riding a scooter is easy on ligaments, tendons, joints and the spine, it is also an excellent rehabilitation device for adults who have impairments. Scooters use similar muscles and joints as walking, running or jumping - but more gently. Adults in need of rehabilitation are thus gently introduced to their former resilience. The scooter has established itself as a rehabilitation device for the following indications in particular:

  • Adults with walking problems: If you have difficulty walking due to muscle and joint injuries or specific diseases such as neuropathy, the scooter can be used as an alternative to walking. This way you can protect yourself, your joints and your feet, but still be out in the fresh air and get some exercise. The scooter is also an excellent aid for reintegration into walking training.
  • Adults with limited mobility of the joints and the spine. If the mobility of the ankles, knee joints, hip joints or spine is limited due to illness or surgery, riding a scooter strengthens cartilage, tendons and muscles as well as mobility in a gentle way. Scooter riding is particularly ideal for restoring mobility after foot, knee and hip injuries, as well as for back problems.
  • Also adults with Muscle weakness e.g. after prolonged lying down or degenerative diseases can use the scooter as a therapy device
  • Patients with Balance disorders e.g. after stroke: Due to the low footboard height of approx. 7 cm, patients with balance problems can also start training and thus also extend their mobility radius.

For rehabilitation to succeed, the commitment of the patients is necessary. Here, too, the scooter is convincing. Riding a scooter is motivating simply because it is fun. Many older adults have not been on a scooter since their childhood days and enjoy this gliding form of transport all the more.

Compared to many other rehabilitation devices, the load of the treadmill training can be dosed very individually. The patient can decide for himself how intensively he wants to train and what is good for him.

Before you use the scooter as a therapy device, however, you should always check with your doctor beforehand. Even though the scooter has proven itself in many cases as a rehabilitation measure for adults, its use must be decided on an individual basis with medical advice.

All parents whose children are out and about on their bicycles know it: the children dash along the pavement so fast that you almost have to jog to keep up with them. And if you're not careful for a moment, they're already at the next intersection. Accompanying the children by bike is no better. You can keep up with the child, but riding a bike on the pavement is often difficult due to space constraints, and actually it's not allowed. Moreover, it is difficult to intervene from the bicycle if the child stumbles or has to be brought to a halt.

Since the scooters (also for adults) are classified as play equipment according to the road traffic regulations, it is permitted to ride them on the pavement. This way, you can stay close to your loved ones even when they are accelerating. Another advantage is that you are much closer to the ground with a scooter than with a bicycle and can therefore intervene very easily in dangerous situations. And last but not least: Riding a scooter is a lot of fun, even for adults!
