Sledging is something every child knows. In this country, riding a kicksled is still something special. In Scandinavia, the robust sleds have long been part of everyday life. Because of their close relationship to kicksleds, they are of course a must in our online shop.

What is a kicksled?

A kicksled is a widely used means of transport and sports equipment for winter in the Scandinavian countries of Sweden, Norway and Finland. On snow and ice, they are often used as a substitute for bicycles. The sledges consist of two very long runners joined together at the front end. Another connection mounted in the front half of the runners also serves as a bracket for the handlebar.

Where does the kicksled come from?

They were first officially mentioned in a northern Swedish magazine in 1870. However, the history probably goes back much further. Originally, these sledges were built entirely of wood. The first Kicksleds with metal runners was introduced by a Swedish company in 1909. In the years from 1890 to 1910, pedal sledge races were an important discipline in the Nordic Games. Since the end of the 1980s, regional competitions and world championships with these sleds have again been held regularly in Finland. This traditional sport has also been revived in the Erz Mountains in Thuringia in recent years. Depending on the region, the pedal sleds therefore have different names:

Sparkstötting o. Spark Sweden

What are pedal sleds used for?

Kicksleds are used for three different purposes. They are used for the

  • Passenger transport
  • Load transport and as
  • Sports equipment

used.

On a classic kicksled, there is a seat in front of the handlebars on which a passenger can sit. Modern kick sleds for sporting competitions, such as the KICKSPARK MAX from our online shop, do not have a seat. All kick sleds can be equipped with the matching Lighting safer.

How do you ride a kicksled?

Riding a kick spark is as easy as riding a scooter. To get started, walk a few steps between the runners. When the sled glides fast enough, you jump onto the runners with your feet on the right and left. During the ride, hold on loosely to the handle. To move forward faster, push yourself off the ground with one leg between the runners of the kicksled. The turns are long and smooth. Your weight rests on your supporting leg. Let the kicksled glide on its own and change your supporting leg every few turns. When the sled glides longer on its own, place the swing leg on the runners as well. You will quickly find your own rhythm.

Cornering and braking with the kicksled

For cornering with the Kicksleds you shift your weight to the inner runner of the kickspark, similar to a snowboard. Kicksparks are braked with the heels. To brake, turn your heels inwards and press them into the snow or onto the ice. When riding on icy surfaces, you should wear shoes with Spikes or wear overshoes for your shoes with spikes to find enough grip when pushing off and braking. When riding Kickspark Winter gloves and a good Helmet not compulsory, but more than recommended for your own safety.
